Give vs. Take in Dictator game

  • In a dictator game, a decision maker decides how to split a cash price (e.g., 10 euros) between self and another person. There are at least two ways to ask the question: 1) Choose the amount X the other person receives (which implies that you receive 10 – X); 2) Choose the amount X you receive (which implies that the other person receives 10 – X). Do the two formats yield the same results? Would the first format evoke higher level of altruism (because it explicitly mentions the other person) and therefore results in higher level of giving?
