Do people form beliefs, and do they act according to beliefs in simple economic games?

  • In strategic interactions, the only normative way of action is to act on beliefs of what others would do. For example, in rock paper scissors, the only reason that you choose rock is because you BELIEVE your opponent will choose scissors. However, anecdotal experiences with such games hint that even in the simplest form of games this basic assumption does not hold, i.e., a lot of people do not form beliefs or act accordingly. In this project, we test whether this basic economic assumption holds using a simple guessing game that resembles the rock paper scissors game.
